Description

William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests—for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love—that's thrilling and timeless.

Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

This is a reread. I still really liked it. I like the story, but I like the feeling of remembering my enjoyment the first time just as much.
  • Ripping good yarn

This book truly is a classic. I first discovered it when a colleague was reading it aloud to his English class of teenagers in a group home for troubled youth (back in the 1980s). When the kids chose to stay in to hear the end of a chapter rather than leave for their smoke break, I became most curious. If you like a ripping good yarn, this book will not disappoint. And if you think it can't be as good as the movie, which is a good romp of its own, you are in for a delight: there's an entire subplot that the movie left out.
  • Lots of Adventure!

I'm glad I read this book since I've heard so much about it, but it really wasn't my type of story. I can see how the action and adventure would be a draw, but it was written in a way that seemed too silly to me. The characters were all a little overblown at times, and often on the ridiculous side. While I can enjoy humor in books, this was a bit over the top for me. I was expecting a great love story, and didn't really feel like that was what I got. Even so, I did enjoy reading the book.

The Princess Bride is one of the most amazing fairy tales ever written! The story is classic and hilarious! You'll find yourself quoting PB all day long! The writing style took me a bit to get used to, but now I love it in this book.

It is unlike anything I have read before in a great way! It's full of dry humor that reads as hilarious! I found myself laughing all the way through this! There's nothing I can really compare it to so if you want to read something for a change of pace, this is it! You won't be sorry!!!!

I had to read this book for a book report, out of a long long list of books. I ended up choosing another book for my report. I found it unthrilling from page one.

After seeing the movie, I simply had to read the book. And let me tell you that I was not let down. The descriptions of the characters are rich, filled with marvelous adjectives. Also, this is a book fit for any reader. It has so much more to offer than romance. It has mystery, comedy, fighting, torture, unusual creatures, and so much more. You won't regret reading this novel!!
